A survey reveals that one in seven Aussie teenagers are considering finishing Year 12 without an ATAR, to protect their mental health from the unwanted pressures of the exams.
The survey also shows that the cost of living is starting to really register with teenagers for the first time, affecting their wellbeing
What’s your take on these results?
Aussie teenagers are at risk of becoming less resilient due to their mental health struggles. Not sitting for their ATARs is not the end of the world, but if the trend gets stronger and more teenagers don’t sit for the usual way they enter university, so many things are affected.
ATAR eligibility scores will fluctuate and be less based on complexity and demand of degree, who knows what it might come down to?
University demand will be low (its already steadily on the decline). Will the government be forced to step in and save the day with our tax money?
We will need to shift to new pathways from school to work. What will this be? Later uni entry, more private college entries?
What if enrolments decrease so significantly and fewer people attend university? How will the labour market shift? Will skill shortages be here to stay? Will gaps increase in our workforce? How will this affect immigration and wages and future IR laws?
I’m spiralling, but this is evidence of how not being prepared impacts the future, especially when you have so much data that shows a variety of outcomes.
